The famous lake was named after Queen Victoria of England by John Speke, a Briton explorer who was the first to document it. Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake by area, the largest tropical lake in the world and the second largest fresh water lake by surface area in the entire world. In terms of volume lake Victoria is the 9th largest continental lake in the whole world, containing about 2750 cubic kilometres of water.

Besides it’s size and depth, the humongous lake and its surroundings is a habitat to a multitude of mammal species, reptiles and plant life. The mammals include; hippos, the African clawless otter, spotted-necked otter, sitatunga, cane rats, mash mongoose, bohor reedbucks and defassa waterbuck. The reptile species include; Nile crocodiles, African helmeted turtles, variable mud turtles and Williams’ mud turtle. Plant life supported in the Lake Victoria region includes; the invading water hyacinth, evergreen trees, giant sedge and cypress papyrus. There are also innumerable flower species. These jaw-dropping facts make Lake Victoria the ultimate place to go for a safari.

Your tour to Uganda’s largest waterbody will begin early in the morning with ATP-Tours driver-guide picking you from your hotel/place convenient for you. There are a number of alternate routes to Lake Victoria but your driver will take the Entebbe route-around 40km from Kampala city. The journey is normally between 45-90 minutes depending on road congestion. Once in Entebbe though, the roads are clear and uncontested.


While driving to the lake you can enjoy eye-catching and mind-gripping scenes of the way of life of the typical Ugandan locals.
