Lake ‘Bunyonyi’ is translated ‘place of many little birds’ from the local language.
The ATP-Tours driver who doubles as your tour guide will pick you at around 7:30 after an early breakfast. You will leave Kampala and head out for your safari to Lake Bunyonyi. You will drive towards the South-western Uganda and make your first stop at the equator in Kayabwe. You will then proceed with your journey and make the next stop at Mbarara to have a sumptuous lunch comprising of the local Ankole delicacies or any other dish of your choice.
You will then proceed, driving through the hilly Kabale countryside and taking in the beautiful scenery of extensive plantations, herds of long-horned cattle grazing in the raised ridges, homesteads with large compounds and small farms, depicting the modest and tranquil way of life in this part of Africa’s pearl.
Once at Lake Bunyonyi, you will be canoed to Ha ‘Buharo Island which is one of the many small islands on the lake. You will check-in at Ha ‘Buharo Island’s Heritage Lodge or any other accommodation of your choice where you will spend the night. You can spend the rest of the evening sailing in a dugout canoe on the lake, birding or relaxing by the lakeside.
You will wake up to the beautiful noise of the twittering of the birds and chirping of crickets. The dense population of birds, flora and fauna give vibrancy to Lake Bunyonyi. After your breakfast you will head out to the Batwa pygmies community, the first inhabitants of the montane rainforests in Uganda. The former hunter-gatherer Batwa people now live as conservation refugees after their eviction from the forests by government to create game parks and reserves. A visit to the Batwa will give you a chance to observe the native and ancient African ways. At your request, the Batwa can dance and sing songs in their native tongue. You will have a chance to hear their story first hand, after which you can choose to trek through the Orugano rainforest. The forest is a habitat to over 250 species of birds including; the Kingfishers, swallows and otters.
In the early afternoon you will have your lunch and head out for a canoe trek on Lake Bunyonyi sailing through the various small islands. Our experienced guide will answer all your questions and tell you several fascinating tales about the enchanting lake and its islands. With a tasty evening meal and a comfortable bed to retire to, the second day of this amazing safari tour to Lake Bunyonyi will end.
After your breakfast in the morning, you will board the ATP-Tours excellent 4x4 wheel safari vehicle and return to Kampala. You will stop for your lunch at Brovad Hotel in Masaka town and continue to Uganda’s capital. Once in Kampala your driver-guide will drop you at your hotel or desired location.
