There are about only 880 individual mountain gorillas in the whole world and Uganda has close to half of that population, with majority of its mountain gorillas – about 340 individuals dwelling in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and a lesser number living in Mgahinga National Park in the South-western Uganda. This 4 days Uganda gorilla trekking safari includes a visit to both parks; Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park. The two parks are still the prime tour destination for an encounter with the Batwa pygmy people – the original forest dwellers who co-existed with the mountain gorillas. Bwindi is however the best park to go to for a sating Uganda gorilla trek.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Leave Kampala – arrive in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

Your 4 days Uganda gorilla trekking expedition and Batwa trail experience will start with driver/guide picking you from your hotel or location in Kampala. After a briefing on how your safari tour will go, you will set out for Uganda’s formidable Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park located in South-western Uganda. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is famous for harboring over 340 individual mountain gorillas, which is close to half of the world’s population of these endangered species. The other eminent feature which makes the park a prime attraction and safari tour destination are the Batwa pygmy people.

Uganda-Equator

On your way to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, you will make a stop at the equator in Kayebwe. While at the equator, you will visit the curio shops in the area to buy a souvenir or merely look at the peculiar items made from Uganda’s local materials, get refreshments and have a brief interaction with the amiable locals. Visiting the equator is a ‘crucial’ part of your Uganda gorilla trekking safari tour.

Your informed driver-guide will keep pointing out key attractions for your attention throughout the journey. You will make your next stop to have lunch in Mbarara – the biggest town in Western Uganda. You will later arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in the evening. You will retire to your choice lodging, preparing to embark on the famous Uganda gorilla trek the next day.

Day 2 – Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

You will have breakfast in the early morning and then head out to the park headquarters for a briefing before hitting one of the trail heads to embark on a Uganda gorilla trek. The park authorities will instruct you on the ideal behavior and conduct while on a trekking excursion. After the briefing, you will embark on your quest for the endangered mountain gorillas. Over ten gorilla families have been habituated to make a Uganda gorilla trek in Bwindi possible. The gorilla families include; the Mubare, Habinyanja and Rushegura families found in Buhoma region, the Mishaya and Nshongi group found in Rushaga region, the Bitukura family found in Ruhija and the Nkuringo group found in Nkuringo region. A standard Uganda gorilla trek takes between 3-8 hours and it involves following hikes and trails which maybe exhausting, yet prove to be worthwhile when you at last find the sought after mountain gorillas. You spend an entire hour watching the giant gorillas; the male Silverbacks, the females and their little ones playing, feeding and interacting with each other. Your day will end with a guided nature walk in the Park. Dinner and a good night’s sleep will be waiting at your lodge.

Day 3 – Batwa trail experience in Mgahinga National Park

After your breakfast, you will transfer to Mgahinga National Park which is close to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to continue with your Uganda gorilla trek safari. The major highlight of your visit to Mgahinga National Park will be encountering the native Batwa forest people. Once you arrive at the park, you will embark on the famous Batwa trail. The Batwa were the first forest dwellers who co-existed with mountain gorillas, among other wildlife and drew their livelihood from the forest. They survived as hunter-gatherers until their eviction by the government on grounds of creating Forest reserves to protect wildlife from poaching. Without compensation, the Batwa have lived as conservation refugees since then.

Bwindi-Gorilla-Batwa-Trackking

An encounter with the Batwa will give you a chance to hear and know their story first hand. A visit to Garama cave – the former palace of the Batwa King located in Mount Mgahinga will allow you the opportunity to witness the Batwa performing songs, dances, plays and folklore echoing their ancient ways. You will end the third day of your Uganda gorilla trek safari with a guided nature walk through Mgahinga National Park. You will then have dinner and sleep over at your choice safari lodging in the Park.

Day 4 – Return to Kampala

On the last day of your gorilla trekking and Batwa trail safari tour you will have breakfast and then embark on your return journey to Kampala – Uganda’s capital. You will arrive in Uganda ‘s capital city in the late evening and the ATP-Tours driver-guide will drop you off at your hotel hotel or drive you to Entebbe airport to catch your flight. This will mark the end of your 4 day gorilla trekking and Batwa trail safari tour.
